‘The commission, which is made up of 13 members representing local government, teachers unions and community organizations, is charged with filling seats on the board that become vacant between elections.”
The Capital has never reported on exactly how those 13 members are selected, notably what organizations they represent, let alone hosted a discussion of whether this was or was not an improvement over the previous School Board Nominating Commission, which during the past legislative session was widely panned as undemocratic and thus corrupt. In my judgment, the new School Board Appointment Commission is much more corrupt.
“Voters are set to begin electing school board members in 2018.”
The implication when the Capital publishes this mantra is that the Appointment Commission will disappear and thus become politically irrelevant after 2018. But it ain’t so, and the public should be told why.
