“Arlotto’s salary for his first year under the new contract will be $269,000. His new term begins July 1.”
Yes, this and the other published cash compensation figures are an accurate replication of the figures published in the press release the superintendent sent the Capital. But in terms of an accurate rendering of Arlotto’s total compensation package, including accumulated sick leave and other forms of deferred compensation, the presented data are pretty much worthless. To be fair, calculating the value of Arlotto’s compensation package using accrual accounting methods is way beyond the skillset of the Capital’s education reporter and, in my experience, most Board of Education members. So relying on the numbers provided by the AACPS PR office is probably the best Capital readers can reasonably expect.

When during recent decades has an Anne Arundel Superintendent not received a unanimous public vote for his contract renewal when the contract renewal was going to pass? In my opinion, what would have been newsworthy (as in “man bites dog”) is if Arlotto hadn’t received a unanimous vote and effusive praise. Given that Arlotto had the votes to win and the power to make any school board member’s life miserable, any school board member who didn’t vote for Arlotto would have flunked Politics 101.
